Crowns are similar to veneers, except that they cover most or all of a tooth. They are used restoratively on broken teeth, or when teeth are so badly decayed that they can't be fixed with a simple filling. Cosmetically they are used when veneers can't quite do the job. In the past, crowns were made from a thin layer of metal covered by tooth-colored porcelain. Although these crowns can look very good, they often appeared somehow unnatural, because the metal layer blocked the normal transmission of light. This type of crown is still used in certain situations on back teeth where maximum strength is desired, and esthetics is not the primary concern. But modern advances now make it possible to make crowns out of pure natural porcelain. These crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth, and can be absolutely stunning when used as part of a "Complete Smile Makeover." Crowns can be used to correct one or more of the following conditions:
  • Discolorations that are natural or acquired.
  • Old fillings or crowns that display metal or are discolored.
  • Teeth that are too short naturally, or are worn down or chipped.
  • Spaces between teeth that are natural or a result of receded gums.
  • Mild to moderately crooked teeth, without the need for braces.
Bridges, which are similar to crowns, are used to replace missing teeth.
