Although little publicized, oral cancer mortality rates are among the worst of all cancers, and unlike almost every other kind, have not improved for decades. This is primarily due to late detection. The problem is that most oral cancers have no symptoms. Three quarters are detected late, when the survival rate is only about 50% (vs. 90% for breast cancer). Similar reductions have occurred with breast cancer (due to mammography), prostate cancer (due to PSA tests), and colon cancer (due to colonoscopy). The American Cancer Society has determined that an annual oral cancer exam using advanced techniques, should be added to this list of yearly screenings at your San Ramon dentistry office.
