In the past, teeth were filled with silver amalgam. The problem with silver is that it corrodes. Those of you with sterling silver jewelry or flatware know this, as you must constantly polish the metal.
Unfortunately, old corroded silver fillings darken teeth and turn them gray. Large fillings also tend to split or crack teeth over time. The newer tooth-colored fillings don't seem to do this as much, and may even strengthen the tooth due to their tenacious bond. Choosing fillings that match the color of your teeth, or replacing old corroded silver fillings that have stained teeth gray, can dramatically improve your smile.
