Laser Cavity Detection uses a relatively new technology in which light is used to detect cavities in their very earliest stages below the surface of the tooth. Traditional methods of locating cavities, may allow them to grow quite large before they are detectable, often resulting in the need for considerable drilling. This can jeopardize the integrity of the tooth, and sometimes causes a toothache. In more advanced cases, a crown or root canal treatment may become necessary. On the other hand, if a cavity is caught in its earliest stages, it can usually be treated in a completely painless procedure without anesthesia, and often at less cost.
